About Me

Hi, I’m Sonia.

For the past nine years, I have been teaching yoga at some of Sydney's largest yoga studios. I am also a Women’s Counsellor, specialising in Domestic and Family Violence.

In my time as yoga teacher, I have become acutely aware of the impact that trauma, anxiety and grief has on our bodies and lives. I've experienced how easy it can be to move through the day feeling disconnected, and how this feeling can be more profound and long lasting in people who have experienced trauma.

But how do we reconnect?

Key trauma theorists including Bessel Van der Kolk, Peter Levine and Judith Herman have explored how we can use somatic or felt experiences – including trauma sensitive yoga – as part of our healing process. They give us the opportunity to slow down, actively practice self care and compassion, and feel safe in our bodies.

My Trauma Sensitive and Yoga for Healing classes allow you to arrive on the yoga mat exactly as you are. I'll guide you through a series of gentle yoga postures, invite you to notice the sensations in your body and the rhythm of your breath, supporting you as you build a connection to your body and how you feel in the present moment. The medicine of present moment awareness can be so powerful. It’s a conscious weaving all of parts of yourself that feel fragmented back to your centre.

We all deserve to feel safe and secure and that can’t come from anywhere else but within. Yoga provides us with an awareness of how it feels to be in our body, with our thoughts and our emotions and build the pieces into an integrated whole. To me, the place that we feel all of that from – that’s our inner nest, it’s the essence of our true self.

I look forward to welcoming you back home, to your inner nest.
